It’s Time to Automate Oral Secretion Management
Continuous oral secretions need continuous management.
SWIK offers a hands-free, comfortable approach to managing oral secretions, giving clinicians and caregivers a new way to support patients. Each SWIK device is indicated for up to 12 hours. Designed for comfort and continuous use, SWIK provides a simple, thoughtful approach to an ongoing need.
Intended Use
SWIK is a single-use, disposable, intra-oral absorbent dental device intended to manage oral secretions by placing an absorbent element in the anterior sulcus. SWIK functions independently through absorption and wicking; however, when connected to an external negative pressure source, secretion removal is enhanced.
SWIK benefits compared to manual saliva ejection methods include:
- May reduce infection risk
- Fewer nursing interactions
- Handles various viscosities of fluid
- Gentle on oral tissues
- Controls drooling
- Improved Experience
- Targeted solutions
- Integrates into current workflow

- Attach the 56 inch Extension Tubing’s blue universal pump connector to the canister on the pump. Pump should be off while attaching. Ensure the connector is securely fastened onto the canister.
- Saturate wicking foam with potable water and gently squeeze to prevent dripping. Wetting the wicking foam makes it more comfortable and helps the wicking process begin.
- Insert the 16 inch Catheter luer connector into the 56 inch Extension Tubing luer connector and gently twist to lock.
- Hold the device with the tubing pointing up-ward. The tubing is pre-set to the patient’s left side. Place tubing over the patient’s left ear, be sure to give a little slack to allow the patient to turn their head from side to side. To change sides, see next instruction.
- To adjust the position of the tubing on the wicking foam, pull the wicking foam taut and gently slide the tubing across the wicking foam. When adjusting, DO NOT slide tubing more than 1/2 inch beyond the end of the wicking foam. DO NOT remove wicking foam from tubing.
- Insert the wicking foam between the patient’s lower lip and gumline. Wicking foam does not cross the biting surface. Push wicking foam deep into the gumline, using fingertips or a long cotton swab, start-ing in the middle and working evenly on both sides along the jawline, reaching the back teeth.
- Check to ensure the wicking foam is not twisted and is securely in place. Check to ensure tubing is not kinked. Secure tubing to face with tape. If using without a pump, remove SWIK® when the wicking foam appears full of secretions, wring out, and reinsert.
- Review pump’s Owner’s Manual for proper set-up and instructions for use. Turn pump on, suggested range is -20 to -40 mmHg. (thick secretions may require higher suction under supervision). Verify suction is functioning by checking that secretions are moving through the tubing. Choose continuous or intermittent settings, based on patient need.
- Turn off the pump and gently remove the device from the patient’s mouth. Turn the pump back on briefly to clear the tube. Disconnect 16 inch Catheter from the 56 inch Extension Tubing and discard.

The Numbers Don’t Lie
An NIH Study* concluded that continuous clearance of oral secretions… may have an important role to play in reducing the rate of VAP and shortening the length of stay of patients in the ICU.
